Maryland Courthouse Locked Down Due To Suspicious White Powder Found In Letter (Updated)

A Baltimore courthouse had to be temporarily locked down on Monday afternoon after a staffer inside the building got a letter with a suspicious white powder inside, officials say.

First responders and HazMat crews were called to the Circuit Court building on North Calvert Street at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, where there was a curious package that sounded alarm bells and led to an evacuation of the second floor of the building.

The Baltimore Fire Department sent crews to the scene to assist with the investigation, and residents have been advised to avoid the area around the 100 block of North Calvert Street as the investigation continues.

Officials say that three people were in close proximity when the white powder substance was opened. They've been isolated and taken to a nearby hospital for additional testing.

The fire department was still at the scene as of 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Moving forward, the Baltimore City Sheriff's Office is expected to provide more information as HazMat crews test the powder.
